A Parable About Selling: The Duck and the Grapes
A Duck walks into a convenience store and asks the guy behind the counter if he has any grapes. The surprised clerk says no.
Fifteen minutes later the duck waddles back in and asks the guy if he has any grapes. This second interruption annoys the clerk and he shouts “No! Get outta here!”
A half hour later walks the duck in again and asks if the store has any grapes. The exasperated clerk yells back “I told you 30 minutes ago that we don’t have any grapes. Now get out of here, I mean it! If you come in again I’m going nail your feet to the floor!”
Ten minutes later in walks the same duck again. He looks at the clerk and this time he says “Do you have any nails?”
“No,” the confused clerk mumbles back.
The duck nods thoughtfully, and then asks “Got any grapes?”
If a customer says “no”, remember that they aren’t rejecting you, they’re only rejecting the offer you’re making. Don’t blame yourself (unless you failed to prepare), because failure is an event, not a person. The trick, if you fall down seven times, is to stand up eight.
